Disco era icon (time has obscured of what), imposing figure whose recordings wowed critics with their eclectic, highly organic mix.
One of the more unforgettable characters to emerge from New York City's hedonistic Studio 54 disco scene, Grace Jones' best-known and strongest releases -- 1980's Warm Leatherette and 1981's Nightclubbing -- came after her switch from disco to a more new wave direction. After Living My Life followed in 1982, the singer took a break from recording to focus on film work, landing roles in Conan the Destroyer and the James Bond flick A View to a Kill. Jones returned to recording with 1985's autobiographical album Slave to the Rhythm, but after 1989's Bulletproof Heart, Jones again turned away from recording as she focused on her movie career. ~ Greg Prato
