Roots-rock singer-songwriter who eventually incorporated elements of jazz, R&B, electronica, and more.
One of the most distinctive and original songwriters of his era, Joe Henry kicked around for awhile in the 1980s before hitting his stride as a recording artist in the '90s via a pair of albums with the Jayhawks as his backing band. Subsequently, Henry left the roots-rock approach far behind, incorporating everything from jazz to R&B to electronics. This approach yielded a series of impressive, eclectic albums that brought him wider notice, and made him an important name in contemporary songwriting.
