After a hiatus and writing retreat near an active volcano in Japan, Akron/Family recorded The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT in Detroit's abandoned train station.
Based on surface signifiers and the band’s laid-back, improvisational approach to songs, the casual observer might semi-accurately file Akron/Family under “freak folk,” but the Brooklyn ensemble also has a grander sensibility--fusing acoustic guitars, electronica, multiple-part harmonies, and lilting, surprisingly poppy choruses that recall an even trippier PET SOUNDS. Further, the band’s live shows are energetic three-ring psychedelic circuses, belying any accusation of hippie lassitude. Signed to Michael Gira’s Young God label since 2005, the prolific musicians have also self-released live albums, solo projects, and alternate versions of their songs.
