The Charlatans UK

Madchester band whose shoegazer-meets-mod-meets-jangle sound brought them much success in the 1990s.

Biography

Along with the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays, the Charlatans were part of the 1980s Manchester indie-dance scene known as "baggy." By the release of their eponymous fourth album, the Charlatans had transformed themselves into revered Britpop songcrafters. Praised by Oasis's Noel Gallagher, the Charlatans became one of the most popular English groups of the 1990s. Their organ-led, melodic approach became a hallmark of the Britpop sound.
