Synth-heavy new wave band led by the expressive sensuality of Terri Nunn; had post-breakup #1 with "Take My Breath Away."
Led by the breathy vocals of Terri Nunn, who elegantly mixed whispered sexuality with brute force, L.A. band Berlin strung together an impressive array of underground hits in the early-1980s. While never much of an album band, songs like "Sex (I'm A)," "The Metro," and the top 40 hit "No More Words" were near pitch-perfect slices of synth-happy, punk-drenched new wave. Oddly, Berlin scored its biggest hit after breaking up, when the brooding ballad "Take My Breath Away" was tabbed as the theme for the 1986 flyboy box office smash TOP GUN and soared to the top of the Billboard charts.
