The B-52's

Quirky, flamboyant, sometimes flat-out bizarre purveyors of perfect pop songs that draw influences from 1950s rock ā€˜n’ roll and dance music.

Biography

The first act to cement Athens, Georgia, as a hotbed of alternative music, the B-52's took their name from the Southern slang for the mile-high bouffant wigs sported by singers Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson, a look emblematic of the band's campy, thrift-store aesthetic. In 1979, they issued their self-titled debut album, a collection of manic, bizarre, and eminently danceable songs. The band became increasingly popular with their releases of Wild Planet (1980), Mesopotamia (1982), Whammy! (1983), and Bouncing Off the Satellites (1986). After the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson, the band spent several years in seclusion but returned in 1989 with Cosmic Thing, their most commercially successful effort. Good Stuff (1992) and Funplex (2008) followed. ~ Jason Ankeny
