Japanese trio whose buzzsaw, Ramones-derived pop has earned a cult following in the USA.
While Japan certainly isn't suffering from a dearth of kitschy, cute pop stars, Shonen Knife still hold a hallowed spot within the halls of Japanese rock & roll. The women of Shonen Knife have been making their irresistibly sugar-sweet punk-pop since the early 1980s. And while they've never broken into the upper regions of the pop charts (in either the U.S. or their native Japan), the band has garnered the respect and admiration of a considerably large swath of music fans--particularly in the underground and alternative rock worlds--and were championed in the 1990s by the likes of Sonic Youth and Nirvana.
