US band who mixed hard rock with blue influences on classic hits such as ‘Born to Be Wild.'
Led by German-born/Canada-bred singer/songwriter John Kay, Steppenwolf evolved from its beginnings as the folk/blues-influenced Sparrow to become seminal late-1960s heavy rockers. Steppenwolf's signature song, "Born to Be Wild," has remained the ultimate biker anthem throughout the decades. Though the bulk of Steppenwolf's hits came in the '60s, the band soldiered on in subsequent years, Kay leading various formations under the name John Kay & Steppenwolf.
