Marc Bolan fronted T. Rex, the group that created the thumping sound and glittery style of glam rock in the early '70s.
The archtype 1970s glam rock band, T. Rex was formed (originally as Tyrannosaurus Rex) by Marc Bolan and Steve Took in 1967 with an arching, sexually-charged brand of rock 'n' roll. At first acoustic, the band turned on the amps after the British hit "Ride a White Swan," and a legend was born. Over a musical life both brief and burning, the band ruled the U.K. charts, while crossing overseas with the U.S. Top Ten, "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." Shortly after the enduring classic single "20th Century Boy" faded from radio, so did Bolan's star; touring began to take its toll. Bolan died in a car crash 1977; however T. Rex's music lived on in the spirit of the legions of bands formed in their name.
