Teenage British folkie finds rabid fanbase on MySpace, immediate major-label attention.
English songstress Laura Marling was barely out of high school when the songs that became her debut EP, MY MANIC AND I, began hitting MySpace and turning a good number of heads. Her voice and lyrics were more evocative of someone twice her age, and her nuanced songwriting, played out primarily on acoustic guitar, was closer in spirit and accomplishment to female heroes like Joni Mitchell than contemporaries like Lily Allen. After MANIC AND I’s independent release, Virgin Records signed Marling for her first full-length, ALAS I CANNOT SWIM, which was preambled by a tour with UK phenomenon Jamie T. The album was also released as a special “SongBox,” partly designed by Marling, which featured elaborate artwork, postcards, anecdotes, and even a concert ticket.
