An early proponent of minimalism, Glass has successfully bridged the gulf between the worlds of American classical and popular music.
Renowned for his employment of insistent rhythms and hypnotically repetitive figures (often at intense volumes), American composer Philip Glass has an instantly recognizable style that he has applied to a variety of forms: operas, film scores, orchestral pieces, and celebrated works like KOYAANISQATSI, which seamlessly combine visual images with music. A student and protégée of Nadia Boulanger, Glass got his start on the contemporary classical scene in the late 1960s, and soon became linked with minimalist wunderkinds Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Glass made a name for himself in 1975 with the production of the opera EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, a collaboration with Robert Wilson. Since that time, his style has become richer and more harmony-laden, but still represents the height of pulsing, minimalist, pop-influenced composition.
