The brainchild of Athens-based singer-songwriter Mathew Houck, Phosphorescent have released a string of critically acclaimed, country-tinged rock albums.
Phosphorescent’s Mathew Houck springs from the same Athens, GA scene that birthed Elephant 6 acts like the Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal, but the stolid, dust-blown Americana of albums like PRIDE and A HUNDRED TIMES OR MORE couldn’t be further removed from the psychedelic pop with which those acts are associated. Houck assumed the Phosphorescent moniker after releasing a single album, 2000’s HIPOLIT, as Filup Shack. The first proper Phosphorescent album, A HUNDRED TIMES OR MORE, was ecstatically received by the English music press, and subsequent efforts like 2005's AW COME AW WRY have proven equally successful. In early 2009, Houck released TO WILLIE, an album of Willie Nelson covers, followed by Here's to Taking it Easy in 2010.
