Originally a politically oriented post-punk outfit, gradually moved past pop, jazz, soul, and reggae influences.
Essentially the alias for singer-songwriter Green Gartside, Scritti Politti are one of the most successful and artistically adventurous bands to emerge from England's post-punk scene of the early 1980s. Transitioning from agit-prop punk beginnings in the late '70s to a pure pop ensemble and later an unabashedly commercial, yet conceptually intriguing R&B/dance band, Gartside and the Scritti Politti name have remained delightfully enigmatic since first appearing. Scritti Politti's critically acclaimed 2006 album WHITE AND BLACK BEER--recorded entirely by Gartside--reflects a more sunny, R&B-inflected classic pop sound.
