Tony Williams

Former Miles David drummer later helped to develop jazz-rock fusion with his band Lifetime.

Biography

One of the most innovative drummers of the post-bop era, Tony Williams got his start playing with legends Sam Rivers and Jackie Mclean. It was, however, his partnership with Miles Davis during the 1960s the launched Williams to a new level of artistry. At the end of the 1960s, Williams left Davis to form the influential jazz-rock band Lifetime. The group set the standard to which all others in the genre aspired, and showcased Williams's frenetic, freewheeling approach to time-keeping. The greatly admired Williams would find himself collaborating with everyone from John Lydon and Bill Laswell to Wynton Marsalis and Davis alum Herbie Hancock througout the rest of his career. Williams died in 1997.
