Americana-via-the-Pleiades chanteuse, a key figure of the early-2000s freak folk scene.
Americana-via-the-Pleiades chanteuse Joanna Newsom is a key figure of the early-2000s "freak folk" scene based around Devendra Banhart and various other new-fangled flower children. A limited vocalist with a nevertheless fearless sense of melody, she also plays harp, harpsichord, and piano, creating dreamy elfin worlds that evoke life both on the forest floor and in the stars. A 2002 tour with Will Oldham and Cat Power introduced her to an ever-burgeoning throng of fans, and in 2004 Chicago's Drag City released her highly acclaimed full-length debut, THE MILK-EYED MENDER, and its follow-up, YS.
