Inspired by the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, the Bangles brought a jangly Rickenbacker folk-rock flavor to '80s rock
The Bangles sprang from the L.A. paisley underground scene, debuting with a scruffy self-released single that sounded like a lost song by the Mamas & the Papas. After a loose EP on IRS, they signed with Columbia. All Over the Place (1984) gave the band's sound a slick cleanup. Different Light (1985) featured the Prince-written number two hit "Manic Monday" and the number one "Walk Like an Egyptian." A cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" likewise reached number one, and Everything (1988) spawned another number one in "Eternal Flame". The band broke up in 1989, only to re-form in 2000 and release Doll Revolution (2003). ~ Denise Sullivan
