Rangy Texas post-grunge band struck gold in the alternative mid-90s.
In the mid-90s, rough and tumble grunge rock dominated the airwaves, and Texas band Toadies found themselves in the unlikely position of being an instant sensation. Their 1994 debut album, RUBBERNECK, was a success on the strength of the hit single “Possum Kingdom,” but their off-kilter, rangy stomp was still an awkward fit for easily pigeonholed scenes. Label trouble and a shift in radio tastes stalled them until 2001’s HELL BELOW/STARS ABOVE, and they stopped outright when bassist Lisa Umbarger left shortly after. “Possum Kingdom,” however, refused to go away, showing up in Playstation’s GUITAR HERO, and 2007 found them re-formed and recording.
