The Artful Dodger

Virginia band of the 1970s, legends to legions of power pop fans and collectors.

Biography

Despite struggling to break into the mainstream, American power pop band Artful Dodger continue to be held in high esteem by the power pop cognoscenti, and their albums are considered unheralded classics. Signed to CBS in the mid 1970s, their self-titled debut was a skilful blend of Beatles-influenced ballads and Cheap Trick-like rockers, the follow-up HONOR AMONG THEIVES (1976), received good reviews but suffered poor sales. 1980’s RAVE ON, which arguably came closest to achieving their true pop vision, met a similar fate, and although the band soldiered on for a while, by 1982 they had fallen apart. The original band, however, played two reunion shows in Cleveland in the early 1990s.
