The Wolfgang Press

The Wolfgang Press was an eclectic U.K. pop/rock on the 4AD label.

Biography

One of 4AD’s longest-running flagship acts, the Wolfgang Press generally fit the British label’s dark, moody sensibility, as heard on “Cut the Tree,” the U.K. group’s contribution to the classic 1987 compilation LONELY IS AN EYESORE. However, the restless ensemble, fronted by deep-voiced singer Michael Allen, also managed an impressive stylistic range, from post-punk to soul-influenced pop to club-ready techno. The latter aesthetic was strongly evinced on the group’s mid-‘90s swansong, FUNKY LITTLE DEMONS, which featured the popular dance single “Going South.”
