A longtime fixture on the New Zealand indie rock scene led by singer-songwriter Graeme Downes.
Led by singer-songwriter Graeme Downes, the Verlaines were a longtime fixture of New Zealand's indie rock scene. After a series of early 1980s singles collected on the 1987 compilation JUVENILIA, the Verlaines made their full-length debut with 1985's HALLELUJAH ALL THE WAY HOME. Other popular albums included 1987's BIRD DOG and 1991's READY TO FLY; their best-known singles were "Joed Out," later covered by Barbara Manning, and "Death and the Maiden." The band went on hiatus following 1997's OVER THE MOON, with Downes releasing a solo album in 2001. However, a new Verlaines album, POTBOILER, was issued in 2007.
