Indebted to the harmony-heavy sound of the British Invasion, the Turtles were the quirkiest mainstream guitar pop group Los Angeles produced in the '60s.
The Turtles' beginnings found them as a folk-rock combo before they repositioned themselves as a pure pop-rock band. The band was fronted by two unlikely looking stars, Flo and Eddie (Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman), whose voices could soar with an ease that made for a series of big hits--including "Happy Together"--in the '60s. Flo and Eddie went on to lead a colorful career in the music industry after the Turtles came to a close, joining Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and singing back-up for a host of top names in the music business. They also toured under the Turtles name on the oldies circuit from the 1980s on.
