Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer whose career spanned the late classical and early Romantic periods. In the public imagination, he remains the archetypal Romantic composer, a moody, brilliant genius who ignored or rejected social and artistic conventions. His restless and turbulent temperament found eloquent expression in his compositions, which frequently pushed the boundaries of tradition, and startled audiences with their originality and power. Late in his life he became deaf, but he continued to compose music of great passion and profundity. Among his most famous and popular works are his nine symphonies, give piano concertos, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. ~ Stephen Eddins
