Monkees member who became a country-rock pioneer.
Though Michael Nesmith became a star as a member of the Monkees, the artistic constraints placed on that initially prefabricated band proved too stifling. He moved on to become a country-rock pioneer, leading his First National Band on a string of classic (if not big-selling) early-’70s albums. His compositions also became hits for other artists, like Linda Ronstadt (“Different Drum”) and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (“Some of Shelly’s Blues”). In later years, Nesmith, whose ’79 album INFINITE RIDER ON THE BIG DOGMA was his last release of all-new material, became an innovator in video technology, and, in the ‘90s, he recorded and performed once again with the Monkees.
