Popular and innovative film composer who has also done great work as a jazz pianist and arranger.
Michel Legrand made his fame and fortune from writing for films, but he has also done significant work in jazz. In the late '50s, he arranged a set of Dixieland and swing standards for a French orchestra and used three different all-star groups for the classic Legrand Jazz. In 1968 he recorded a strictly jazz set with a trio. Legrand has also written for albums led by Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, and on several occasions, Phil Woods. Several of his songs (such as [roviLink="MC"]"What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life," [roviLink="MC"]"Watch What Happens," and [roviLink="MC"]"The Summer Knows") have been recorded many times by jazz musicians. ~ Scott Yanow
