Jazz keyboardist-organist who has also been involved in music education.
One of the pioneers of jazz fusion, pianist Lonnie Liston Smith got his start in New York City's thriving early-1960s jazz scene. He accompanied Betty Carter, and went on to work with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey, Pharoah Sanders, and Miles Davis, all of whom helped to hone his supple, funk-inflected style. In '73, Smith formed the Cosmic Echoes, who recorded a number of successful soft fusion albums and had an R&B hit with "Space Princess."
