After having a few minor hits in the swinging '60s, Cat Stevens became one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the '70s before retiring from pop to devote himself to his Muslim religion in 1979.
Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou, became interested in folk music and rock & roll in his teens while attending Hammersmith College, and in 1965 began performing under the name Steve Adams. He changed his name after signing with Decca Records, where he spent the late '60s topping the British and U.S. charts. He moved to Island Records in the '70s, where he did his most introspective work. In 1977, Stevens formally became a Muslim and adopted the name Yusuf Islam. He retired from pop music the following year, but returned in 2006 with an all-new collection of songs called An Other Cup. ~ William Ruhlmann
