Biography

In a career tragically cut short by a brain tumor, George Gershwin (1898-1937) had his first major hit with [roviLink="MC"]"Swanee" in 1919. Working primarily with his brother Ira as his lyricist, Gershwin scored a series of Broadway hits in the '20s and '30s, while simultaneously working in the classical field, beginning with [roviLink="MC"]"Rhapsody in Blue" in 1924. The Gershwins' Of Thee I Sing became the first musical to win a Pulitzer Prize, and in the mid-'30s the pair ambitiously combined George's show music and classical leanings in the folk opera Porgy and Bess. The Gershwins were engaged in several movie projects at the time of George Gershwin's death. ~ William Ruhlmann
