Montreal modern rockers created a sensation by combining the Cure's cinematic melancholia with the orchestral fire of Mercury Rev.
Hailing from the musical hotbed of Montreal, Arcade Fire formed in the summer of 2003. The band's eclectic mix of bossa nova, punk, and classically tinged songs drawing upon everything from U2's passion to David Bowie's, was apparent on their 2003 eponymous debut, but it wasn't until 2004's Funeral that the band hit its stride. The record was met with unanimous acclaim -- both commercially and critically -- garnering the band an endless string of world-wide tour dates, the cover of Time magazine's Canadian edition, and a Grammy nomination. Neon Bible arrived in March 2007, featuring such grand ornamentations as a pipe organ, a military choir, and a full orchestra. ~ Andrew Leahey & MacKenzie Wilson
