Fine Young Cannibals

Sophisticated new-wave-and-ska-inspired pop group led by the haunting falsetto of Roland Gift, scored huge hits in the '80s.

Biography

Formed from the ashes of the Beat in 1983, Fine Young Cannibals kept Andy Cox and David Steele, who in turn, invited Roland Gift, an aspiring actor with an unforgettable lilting falsetto, to provide vocals. The combination made for an arrestingly disarming and unique sound and their debut single "Johnny Come Home" soared into the U.K. Top 10 in June 1985. Their self-titled debut, complete with sassy covers of the Buzzcocks and Elvis Presley, made them an instant critical sensation in their homeland. However, it was their second album, THE RAW AND THE COOKED, featuring a pair of #1 hits, "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing," which made the act international superstars. Apparently prefering not to fade away, the Cannibals have yet to release a third record.
