Country singer and early architect of rock & roll whose amazing versatility saw him branch into various genres including jazz, blues, and R&B.
A soulful singer with eclectic tastes, Charlie Rich left behind a body of music that includes early rock & roll, straight country, Memphis blue-eyed soul, and jazz (at times bridging the gap between all of them). While Rich is best known for his 1970s countrypolitan hits "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl," hardcore fans prefer his earlier, grittier recordings for the Sun, Smash, and Groove labels in the 1950 and 1960s. One of music's true underappreciated geniuses, Rich died in 1995.
