Joe Budden

Streetwise MC bounces back from label limbo with mixtape series and new deal.

Biography

This New Jersey native began turning heads in 2003 with his hit single, “Pump It Up.” Weaned on 1990s-era, street-savvy New York hip-hop, Budden became a quick fixture on the mixtape circuit, before eventually signing a deal to Def Jam and releasing his self-titled debut in ’03. While the record was well-received critically, Def Jam president Jay-Z opted not to release Budden’s follow-up, THE GROWTH. The MC responded with a series of successful mixtapes titled MOOD MUZIK (as well as some very public criticisms of his former boss Jay-Z), and was signed to the Amalgam label for his 2009 formal follow-up, PADDED ROOM.
