Long-running English outfit mixes UK punk, Celtic folk and staunch politics over two decades.
Formed in Brighton, England in 1998 by Mark Chadwick and Jeremy Cunningham, The Levellers produced a mix of Pogues-inspired pub-folk and Sex Pistols-fueled punk, aligning them with bands like The Waterboys. They released their first EP, CARRY ME, in 1989. By 1991, their second full-length, LEVELLING THE LAND, made them Top 40 stars in the UK. For the next decade-plus, the group continued to record political anthems, but were also becoming increasingly musical, expanding their folk influence. They still tour and record actively, supporting the Brighton music scene and anarchist causes, and have seen much of their earlier work re-released through Rhino Records.
