Biography

The Coasters were one of the trailblazing early R&B/rock-&-roll acts of the 1950s, achieving wide crossover appeal with their catchy tunes, excellent harmonies, and witty, theatrical performances. Based in Los Angeles and arising from the ashes of the doo-wop group the Robins, the Coasters signed with Atlantic and struck up a fruitful association with the songwriting duo Leiber & Stoller. The group’s first single, “Down in Mexico,” was a hit, as was 1957's double smash “Young Blood”/”Searchin’.” Line-up changes and a move to New York precipitated the group’s greatest success, as “Yakkity Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” and “Poison Ivy” topped the charts through the late ‘50s.
