Big L

Harlem MC links up with New York luminaries, finds both success and untimely death.

Biography

By the time he was 20, Harlem MC Lamon Coleman (aka Big L, ironically named for his diminutive stature) had gained attention for appearing on a Lord Finesse track. Columbia Records soon released 1995’s LIFESTYLES OV DA POOR AND DANGEROUS, which allowed the rapper to introduce peers like Cam’ron, Mase and, most notably, Jay-Z to the hip-hop world. L was also a member of Fat Joe’s Diggin’ In The Crates crew, and formed a group called the Wolfpack with McGruff and C-Town. Unfortunately, L was shot and killed near his home in 1999, but his legacy lives on through both a posthumous Wolfpack record and 2000’s compilation, THE BIG PICTURE.
