Chicago-based R&B vocal group whose tight, gorgeous harmonies earned them several hits at the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll.
The Flamingos formed in Chicago in 1951, and were renowned for producing the tightest and most gorgeous R&B vocal harmonies of the rock ‘n’ roll era. The magnificent ballad "I’ll Be Home," a #5 R&B hit in 1956 on Chess Records, was followed by a string of hits between 1958 and 1962, including "Lovers Never Say Goodbye," the enduring standard "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Nobody Loves Me Like You," and "I Know Better." As the British Invasion kicked in, the hits tailed off, although the act continued to have occasional hits like "Boogaloo Party" in 1969 and "Buffalo Soldier" in 1972.
