Steve Vai

Fast-fingered rock guitar god who's engaged mortals on a fleet of popular (and blisteringly fierce) instrumental albums.

Biography

Along with his onetime teacher Joe Satriani, six-string wizard Steve Vai set the standard for rock guitar virtuosity in the '80s. From his stints as sideman for such rock royals as Frank Zappa and David Lee Roth to his work as session man for such diverse acts as Whitesnake, Alice Cooper, Public Image Ltd., and Joe Jackson -- all capped with an impressive solo résumé -- Vai dominated the scene as a true "guitar god." As if his busy schedule weren't full enough, Vai also pursues his lifelong interest in beekeeping -- harvesting honey among five bee colonies in the backyard of his home. ~ Greg Prato
