Associated with the Southern California cowpunk scene of the early 1980s, the Beat Farmers mixed country, rockabilly, and roots rock with punk energy and a raucous sense of humor. Led by singer and drummer Country Dick Montana, the band built a loyal following in their native San Diego before releasing their first album, TALES OF THE NEW WEST, in 1984. A tour and a live EP followed, and the band signed to Curb Records, which released the group’s next four albums. Country Dick kept busy with various side projects, including collaborations with Mojo Nixon and Dave Alvin of the Blasters, while maintaining a steady touring and recording schedule with the Beat Farmers. Two more albums followed, VIKING LULLABIES in ’94 and MANIFOLD in ’95, respectively, the same year Country Dick died of a heart attack at 40 years old.
