A highly influential avant-garde composer and one of the key founders of the minimalist school of music.
After studying composition at Juilliard School of Music with avant-garde composers Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud, Steve Reich formed the groundbreaking and long-running ensemble Steve Reich And Musicians in 1966. One of the founders of the Minimalist school, Reich's music is rooted in traditional African and Balinese forms as well as Baroque composition. His work has ranged from the extreme minimalism of "Clapping Music" (literally two people clapping) and the astonishing early tape works "Come Out" and "It’s Gonna Rain" to more classically minded pieces such as "The Four Sections" and "The Desert Music" for orchestra and choir. Reich continued to create challenging works into the 2000s, and saw his innovations have a clear impact on the development of new pop music forms--including techno and experimental rock--as well.
