The Sisters of Mercy

UK post-punk outfit of the 80s who were prime movers in the goth rock scene.

Biography

One of England's leading goth bands of the 1980s, the Sisters of Mercy play a slow, gloomy, ponderous hybrid of metal and psychedelia, often incorporating dance beats; the one constant in the band's career has been deep-voiced singer Andrew Eldritch (guitarist Wayne Hussey would go on to form the Mercy offshoot the Sisterhood and ultimately the more recognizable Mission UK), who originally formed the band in 1980 and recorded its first single with a drum machine dubbed Doktor Avalanche. The Sisters built a reputation through several singles and EPs before hitting their commercial peak with 1987's Floodland and 1990's Vision Thing. ~ Steve Huey
