Shearwater is a side project by singer-songwriters Will Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg. When the duo formed in 1999, Sheff and Meiburg were the singer and keyboardist, respectively, in the folkish Austin indie rockers Okkervil River. Shearwater were initially conceived as a temporary outlet for a quieter and more reflective sound, but the success of their 2001 debut album, THE DISSOLVING ROOM, led to the formation of a full-sized band, with the addition of bassist Kim Burke (at the time Meiburg's wife), drummer Thor Harris, and multi-instrumentalist Howard Draper, and the continuation of Shearwater as an ongoing project alongside Okkervil River.
